Insecticides
Insecticides are chemicals used to get rid of insects. They include substances that kill insect eggs (ovicides) and insect larvae (larvicides). People use insecticides in farming, healthcare, industry, and at home. In the 20th century, insecticides played a big role in increasing agricultural productivity. However, they can have significant impacts on ecosystems, as many are harmful to humans and animals, and some become more concentrated as they move up the food chain.
Insecticides are divided into two main types: systemic, which travel through plants after being absorbed, and contact, which do not.
