Organic Solvents
Graphite impregnated materials are typically not corroded by solvents. Solvents are often mixed with acids in fine chemical and pharmaceutical processes. These multipurpose processes make it challenging to design metallic heat exchangers compatible with all chemicals, making graphite a suitable choice.
However, traditional graphites, using large-grain graphite impregnated with phenolic resin, are sensitive to certain solvents like methanol. Solvents can cause swelling in the resin, generating mechanical stress in graphite and leading to premature failure.
GT has developed a special grade, GT FLON, capable of withstanding approximately 95% of chemical formulations, including all known solvents. Corrosion testing or sample requests can be arranged upon request.
